Norppapolku – Hiking in the picturesque archipelago

Norppapolku will introduce you the diverse scenery of wonderful lake Saimaa. It is one of the selected geosites in the Unesco Saimaa Geopark.

The circular trail is 13 km long. For a shorter hike, choose one of the three smaller loops (Kitulan lenkki 3 km, Kaivannon kieppi 4 km or Kotkatsaaren kierros 2.8 km). The route is somewhat less strenuous when walking clockwise. The last few kilometres run along a snowmobile track, so please use caution in the winter.

The trail winds though coniferous forests, rocky beaches and wetlands. Please note that the cliff overlook at Kataalahti requires some climbing, and is not recommended for people with limited mobility. The island of Kotkatsaari has lovely beaches on the eastern shore and at the visitor's harbour.

In Kaivanto you will find a large shelter with campfire sites and an outhouse at the parking lot (address Luukkolantie 227, 52200 Puumala). Kaivanto has a free supply of drinking water too. Please use caution near the logging site on Kaivanto Island.

Building a fire is only allowed at designated campfire sites when weather conditions are safe. Please remember that backpackers also have responsibilities. Do not camp near the trail, respect nature and do not litter.

Start at the Puumala marina and bridge tower. Cross the bridge and head towards Kitulanniemi (1) from the end of Kotiniementie, passing a larch forest. You can also hop on the trail at the junction of Kitulanniementie and Luukkolantie (2) or Luukkolantie and Kerminhiekantie (3).

For those arriving by car, we recommend that you park at the Puumala village centre or at Kaivanto (4, address Luukkolantie 227, 52200 Puumala).

Have a nice time enjoying the best landscapes of lake Saimaa!
